The numbers of many types of birds have been decreasing. The main reason for this decline is loss of habitat (a place where a bird naturally and normally lives). Landowners can have a major role in saving birds by managing their land to offer good habitat, including plants that provide food for birds.

Birds Without Borders - Aves Sin Fronteras® (BWB-ASF), a research, education and conservation project, has been studying birds in both Wisconsin and Belize since 1997. BWB-ASF is sponsored by the Foundation for Wildlife Conservation, Inc., and the Zoological Society of Milwaukee, both based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A.

Our manual is the result of more than seven years of field research in Belize by Birds Without Borders - Aves Sin Fronteras®. It provides information on habitats and plants that we have found to be important to birds. It also includes other information on how to help birds. There are many pictures of birds and plants so that the reader can easily identify them.

The manual contains information on how to conserve Belize's birds, including both resident and Neotropical migratory birds. Belize and Wisconsin are linked by these migratory birds. Did you know that more than 114 bird species migrate between Belize and Wisconsin?

As a landowner or land manager, your actions are an important part of bird conservation and can make a big difference in helping Belize’s birds. This manual will help you to get started on your land. To save larger areas of habitat, talk with your neighbors and friends to see if they are interested in joining you to conserve and protect birds.
