Head Start on Life: The Milwaukee County Zoo gives ornate box turtles a head start and then releases them into the wild.
Giving ornate box turtles a head start at the Milwaukee Count Zoo and then releasing them into the wild has been a long-term project. Chad Pappas, a zookeeper at the Milwaukee County Zoo, received a field research grant funded by the Zoological Society of Milwaukee, to release “head-started turtles” into the wild in Wisconsin in 2008. The Zoological Society has supported the Zoo’s head-start program for these endangered turtles for several years.
