You could go on a culinary tour of the metro-Milwaukee area at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel a la Carte at the Zoo. This annual food-and-music festival features more than 30 area eateries ranging from Palms Bistro and Bar to Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery. Sample Milwaukee-area classics such as frozen custard and try ethnic treats like falafel sandwiches. Live rock and jazz bands will play every night on six stages throughout the Zoo, and the Giraffe Village Wine Tent will offer wine tastings for adults.
Saturday’s music includes the Aaron Neville Quintet featuring Charles Neville. For families and youngsters, the event offers animal-themed art and craft projects at the Northwestern Mutual Family Farm. You can visit the Zoo’s big eaters such as the elephants and the polar bears throughout the four-day fest; all animal exhibits will be open (the Herb & Nada Mahler Family Aviary closes at dusk). If anyone eats like a bird at this event, it’ll be Australian parrots at the special summer exhibit, Wings From Down Under, sponsored by Lowe’s. You can feed the small, colorful birds; admission is $2.50, and a millet seed stick is included.
