Nights in June
Susan Knapp of Milwaukee and her daughter, Estella Gabor, 4, observed the Milwaukee County Zoo’s orangutan, M.J., as Zoo Pride volunteer Elaine McDermott talked about the endangered great ape at last year's event.

What better way to welcome in summer than to explore the Milwaukee County Zoo on a warm summer evening? Nights in June, one of the Zoological Society of Milwaukee’s (ZSM’s) summer members-only events, is a chance to welcome back warm-weather animals, see new exhibits and new entrance, and even kick off the gardening season. This year’s event features outreach booths in the Peck Welcome Center staffed by University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee extension master gardeners, the Orchid Society, the Herb Society and Hawks Nursery.Like flowers, flamingos are easy on the eyes. Enjoy the beautiful sights and the surprisingly loud sounds of Caribbean flamingos at new flamingo exhibit. Starting at 2 p.m. each day of the event, ZSM members also get free admission to the special exhibit Sting Ray & Shark Reef, sponsored by Sundance Vacations; just show your Zoo Pass card and ID. Sting ray and shark food costs extra. All the other Nights in June activities start after 5:15 p.m., when parking is $9. Parking during the day is the regular price of $10. Note that the Zoo’s admission gates will close for the day by 4:15 p.m. and re-open for this members-only event at 5:15 p.m.

All animal buildings at the Zoo will be open; the Herb & Nada Mahler Family Aviary, however, will close at dusk. Enjoy live music all evening long. Catch of the Day, a horn-driven rock band, will perform on the Zoo Terrace Stage, sponsored by American Family Insurance. The Pink Flamingoes will play rock and pop music on the Flamingo Patio stage. See animal artifacts at the Remains to Be Seen carts and meet Wisconsin animals at the Animal Encounter shows in the Northwestern Mutual Family Farm. Make animal crafts, enjoy family-oriented movies or shop at the Extravaganzoo Sale in the Peck Welcome Center. Purchase dinner at Zoo restaurants or at the booths of area restaurants. For dessert try our popular root beer floats to support the Sponsor an Animal program; buy floats at the Monkey Hut near Macaque Island.

Both the Penzeys Spices Carousel and the North Shore Bank Safari Train will run till dusk (weather permitting) at regular prices. Miller Brewing Company’s Oceans of Fun Seal/Sea Lion Show will have one show ($2 per person), at 7 p.m. To facilitate traffic flow, the National City Zoomobile will not operate. You are invited on the night specified on your invitation (see enclosed); however, if that date is inconvenient, you may attend on one of the other evenings. The event will be held rain or shine.
