Houses on display August 14 - 29, 2008

Everyone knows that kids like to play, but did you know that play makes kids smart? According to recent scientific research, everything from climbing to playing make-believe helps children develop brain power. The four playhouses plus a backyard play set to be raffled off as part of the Zoological Society of Milwaukee’s (ZSM’s) Playhouse Raffle 2008 are a great way to exercise your kids’ minds. The high-quality, child-size playhouses are: a fort, a dollhouse, a train station and a mini-mansion. The houses and the play set go on display at the Milwaukee County Zoo Aug. 14, but raffle tickets will be available July 1 from the ZSM office at the Zoo (brochures are available in July).

Train StationTicket prices are $3 for one, $5 for two, $10 for five, $20 for 15; buy 50 or more tickets, and they’re $1 each. The playhouses, the play set, plus air transportation for two to any American Airlines/American Eagle U.S. destination (excludes Alaska and Hawaii) will be raffled off in separate drawings for each item on Aug. 29 at the Zoo. Ticket buyers must purchase a separate ticket for each playhouse, the play set or airline transportation.

This year two houses were designed and built by Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) students as part of a class project. Recent MSOE graduate Ryan Moore designed Fort Union, a rustic fort with wooden posts. Pleasant View Cottage, a dollhouse-style playhouse designed by architecture student Jeff Schwasinger, will make a perfect kid-size home to store dolls and other toys. Kids who like the Zoo’s North Shore Bank Safari Train will love the Zoo Train Station playhouse, a mini-replica designed by Building Service, Inc. Cedar Palace playhouse, built and donated by the Southeast Wisconsin Carpentry Training Center, is great for playing make-believe. Kids will love swinging and climbing on the backyard play set, Monkeying Around, donated by Backyard Playsets LLC.

The Zoological Society will transport the playhouses to each winner’s desired location (within 25 miles of the Zoo) within six weeks of the drawing.
