Ride on the Wild Side 2016
2.5-Mile Critter Caravan
Pack your favorite plush toy, hop on your bike or in your burley and enjoy a scenic route past the animals! Kids are encouraged to bring an animal plush toy in a backpack or carrier and take it along for the ride with a fabulous view. The route twists through the Milwaukee County Zoo and remains on the Zoo grounds the entire time. Ride it once or multiple times, as long as your ride is completed by 9 a.m.
Below is a brief overview of the distance bike routes. Make sure to grab a cue sheet and map at registration for all the specific twists and turns!
Ride past the rhinos and travel past the tortoise as you start your ride through the Zoo. After exiting the Zoo, riders travel east on Blue Mound Road, north to 95th Street, east on Wisconsin Avenue to Honey Creek Parkway. Head north on Honey Creek Parkway, and then continue northeast until you reach the Oakleaf Trail (76 Bike Trail). Take the Oak Leaf Trail northwest along the Menomonee River Parkway until you reach the bridge at Hoyt Park (Tosa Pool). Take a left across the bridge, drive through the park (restrooms and water station will be open for riders) follow the sidewalk alongside Swan Blvd. Take the next right to get back on the Oak Leaf Trail along the Menomonee River Parkway, and take the same route back to the Zoo.
Speed past the seals and whiz by the warthog as you start your ride through the Zoo. After exiting the Zoo, riders travel east on Blue Mound Road, north to 95th Street, east on Wisconsin Avenue to Honey Creek Parkway. Head north on Honey Creek Parkway, and then continue northwest on Menomonee River Parkway and the Oakleaf Trail (76 Bike Trail). Stay on the Menomonee River Parkway, cross Burleigh St., and Mayfair Road. Then connect with the Oakleaf trail before reaching our rest stop at Parkview Middle School. Enjoy refreshments here before taking the same route back to the Zoo.
Zoom past the zebras and fly by the flamingos as you start your ride through the Zoo. Follow the 17-Mile Ride (above) to the rest stop at Parkview Middle School. After the break, continue west and then north on the bike trail to Silver Spring Dr., where you will cross at 107th Street and once again connect with the Oakleaf Trail. Proceed on the Little Menomonee River Parkway past Appleton Ave, Mill Rd., Fond du Lac Ave., and Leon Terrace before another quick jaunt on the bike trail, a quick square through Milwaukee neighborhoods, and then continuing back to the rest stop and the Zoo via the parkway and Oakleaf trail.
