Centennial Birthday Party Photos

The Zoological Society of Milwaukee celebrated its 100th birthday on Jan. 9, 2010, at the Zoo. The Centennial Celebration Kickoff, sponsored by Tri City National Bank, featured Old World Wisconsin historical interpreters, a barbershop quartet, a museum-style photo history of the Zoological Society, retro kids’ games, a cake-decorating contest and other fun.

Sam LaMalfa talked with zoogoers Jan. 9 about Samson the gorilla, one of the most famous animals in Zoo history. The now retired La Malfa was Samson’s head keeper from 1973 until the great ape’s death in 1981. He stood near the Milwaukee Public Museum’s replica of Samson (background) and showed visitors his Samson-themed memorabilia. Click here for an interview with LaMalfa about Samson.
