Early History of the Zoological Society
Special thanks to the
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for contributing many of the unknown photographer images.
The Zoo Line, a child-size train running on a quarter-mile track through the Zoo, was a gift of The Journal Company. The train was the first attraction to open at the Milwaukee County Zoo, before the animal buildings were finished. Years later, Irwin Maier (wearing train engineer’s cap) donated this new engine to the Zoo. As of 2009, the Zoo had recorded 16.8 million riders.Photo courtesy of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
