Early History of the Zoological Society

Special thanks to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for contributing many of the unknown photographer images.

In 1907, Ald. Henry Bulder raised money to purchase an elephant named Countess Heine for $1,500. The money was raised through the sale of elephant buttons and a special concert. Famous actress Sarah Bernhardt donated an autographed photo that Bulder auctioned to raise funds. The elephant gave rides to Zoo visitors and created a tremendous amount of public support for the Zoo.Photo: Jos. Brown
