During hot summer months people find many ways to stay cool, such as by swimming or using air conditioners. Elephants have a unique way to stay cool – they flap their ears! Elephant ears are filled with blood vessels. When they flap their ears, air flows over the blood vessels, thus cooling the rest of the body. It’s kind of like having a built-in air conditioner!
You can be “cool” this summer by sponsoring Brittany, one of the Milwaukee County Zoo’s African elephants. Sponsoring an animal is a great gift idea for birthdays, anniversaries or other special occasions. This limited-time offer is available through Dec. 31, 2013.
