Great Ape! Great Mom!
Gorillas are the largest and strongest of the great apes. There are four subspecies of gorillas: western lowland, Cross River, mountain and eastern lowland. The western lowland gorilla is the subspecies you will see at the Milwaukee County Zoo. A group of gorillas is called a troop. A troop consists of a silverback with several females and their young. A newborn gorillas will cling to its mother’s fur on her back. This frees up the mother’s hands as she moves through the thick rainforest. On Nov. 24, 2014 the Milwaukee County Zoo welcomed a baby gorilla to mom Shalia. The newborn male was named Sulaiman (Sue lay man) – which means peace in Swahili.
