Arabian horses are one of the oldest breed of riding horses, established more than 4,500 years ago. They’re generally small in stature, but don’t let their size fool you. A versatile breed, Arabians were originally bred and used as war horses by Bedouin Arabs, the nomads who hail from the Arabian Peninsula. Arabian horses can travel far distances in the harsh desert climate. Beautiful distinguishing features set them apart from other horse breeds, such as their finely chiseled bone structure, concave profile, arched neck, and high-carried tail. Their bone structure is different from other breeds. Arabians have 17 ribs, five lumbar bones and 16 tail vertebrate, while other breeds have 18 ribs, six lumbar bones and 18 tail vertebrate.
Meet Gypsy! Gypsy is an Arabian horse who came to the Milwaukee County Zoo in April 2013 after retiring from Stepping Stones Farms School of Horsemanship in Genesse, Wis. There she had worked as a therapy horse, helping hundreds of at-risk teens every year. Unfortunately it became painful for Gypsy to give rides. She came to Zoo to spend her retirement years, educating zoogoers about horses.
