Spotted Beauty

Jaguar cubsOn Nov. 13, 2012, two male jaguar cubs were born at the Milwaukee County Zoo to first-time Mom Stella and Dad Pat. The cubs bring valuable genes to the North American zoo jaguar population. That’s because their dad is a rescued, wild-born animal from Belize, Central America. Pat had a book written about his capture and journey to the Zoo called “Pat the Great Cat.” He serves as an ambassador to the wild population and to the conservation of the species. Jaguars are beautiful and very powerful big cats that are found throughout Central and South America. Their beautiful tawny coats are covered with black rosettes (spots); they can also be all black with the rosettes still visible.

The cubs made their first public appearance on Feb. 13, 2013, in the Zoo’s Florence Mila Borchert Big Cat Country. Jenkins Jaguar and Wisconsin Jaguars Ltd. auto club sponsored a Name-the-Jaguar-Cub Contest. The general public in the U.S. named one jaguar B’alam, which is Mayan for “great and powerful king.” For the other cub, Belizean schoolchildren chose Zean (Zee-ahn), the last four letters of “Belizean,” representing the cub’s link to Belize.
