On July 24 and 25 three African lion cubs were born at the Milwaukee County Zoo. They are the first offspring of parents, Themba and Sanura. This marks the first time the Zoo will have lion cubs on exhibit since 1974. The cubs, two males and one female, had their first exams and vaccinations on August 25. Right now the public can see the cubs on a special video in the Florence Mila Borchert Family Big Cat Country. They will make their public debut when they are approximately three months old.
Lions are the most sociable of the big cats, living in groups called prides. Prides are made up of related females with their young and one or more mature males, which are unrelated to the females. Adult males stay with the pride for a few months to several years, until they move on. Males are important for defending the pride while the females do most of the hunting. Due to habitat loss and conflicts with humans, lion populations are vulnerable in most of Africa.
