Made in the Shade

Polar bears and seals: are they inside or out?
You love to watch them playing about

But on those days when it gets too hot
they look for shade but can’t find a lot

They look for shade where it may be
it’s usually someplace you can’t see

A shadier spot is what they need
so they’ll be outdoors for all to see

So we have partnered with the Zoo
To create some shade and improvements, too!

A camera located within the dens
with live Web feed and a better lens
New salt baths give a soothing soak
To the harbor seals’ “overcoats”
The pumps and piping will be upgraded
To improve the water that’s circulated
Soon two structures will be made
To give the seals and bears some shade

These animals you love, we know you care
Thanks for helping our seals and polar bears!

Please write a check, send cash or charge
No donation you give is ever too large!

The Milwaukee County Zoo is planning to improve the seal and polar bear habitats. To increase the scope of the project, the Zoological Society of Milwaukee is partnering with the Zoo for our annual appeal. The project will include structures for both seals and polar bears to give them shade from the summer sun. You’ll have a better chance of seeing these cool-weather animals during warm, sunny days. You could also learn more about these creatures since revamped rockwork in the seal exhibit will help zookeepers give talks for Zoo guests and care for the animals!

Behind the scenes, the polar bear dens will get new features such as heated water bowls to prevent their drinking water from freezing during winter months. A Web cam will be installed so you can see the den online when the animals are off exhibit. This feature will be especially nice if our female polar bear, Snow Lilly, has offspring. This project will also include improved salt baths for the seals and an upgraded water system in the seal and polar bear areas.

Revamped signs and interactive displays around the exhibit will feature the latest information on challenges these animals face in the wild, and on how climate change is affecting their habitats.

In the future, these improvements will make it possible for more seals to come to the Milwaukee County Zoo.
