Remembering Dr. Gil Boese

The Zoological Society of Milwaukee and the Milwaukee County Zoo are saddened by the passing of Dr. Gilbert Boese. As leader of the Milwaukee County Zoo and later the Zoological Society, Dr. Boese had a huge impact on the Milwaukee area and on wildlife around the world, from jaguars in Belize to bonobos in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We have lost a true visionary and friend. The former zoo director and president and CEO of the Zoological Society of Milwaukee died Thursday, March 22, at the age of 80. Dr. Boese helped raise about $56 million through two capital campaigns that added 14 new or remodeled buildings to the Zoo.
