A Space Adventure

Kohl’s Wild Theater is boldly going where it has never gone before: outer space. The theater program that teaches us all about animals, the environment and conservation has a similar message, but from thousands of miles away. This winter, Kohl’s Wild Theater is introducing a new musical, “The Monarch: A Space Adventure.” Schools and teachers have been requesting a show about space for years, and Kohl’s Wild Theater answered with a powerful new musical. “I think the idea of space travel is exciting. Audiences love the idea of going on an adventure,” says Dave McLellan, Kohl’s Wild Theater program coordinator.

The upcoming show features Captain Jane Faraday and Mr. Ben Sable as they head into space looking for alternative fuel. What they find is a child stowaway named Sam. As the three travel in space, the audience learns about other planets, the atmosphere and our need for a healthy ecosystem. “The Monarch: A Space Adventure” premieres in February and has been booking faster than any other Kohl’s Wild Theater travelling show. Local teachers and school leaders say Kohl’s Wild Theater brings something new to their education plan. “A play like ‘The Monarch’ allows students to immerse themselves in a fantastic situation while learning concepts that impact their daily lives. This takes learning beyond a textbook and makes it memorable for students of all ages,” says Rochelle Sandrin, Science Curriculum Specialist for MPS.

The 40-minute musical is meant for grades 1 through 5 and connects with Next Generation Science Standards. “Kohl’s Wild Theater presents scientific information in an alternative and engaging style that combines music, scientific information, and fun!” says Amy Witteman, 3rd-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School, Wauwatosa.

Kohl’s Wild Theater is made possible by a partnership with Kohl’s Cares, the Zoological Society of Milwaukee and the Milwaukee County Zoo. It performs shows through the year free of charge at schools, festivals and community events within a one-hour radius of the Zoo. For more information and to book a show, visit wildtheater.org.
