Going Green
The Zoological Society of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County Zoo and SSA, the Zoo’s retail and concessions partner, have taken many steps to reduce their impact on the environment, including:
- Eliminating the use of plastic bags and switching to reusable name tags in the Zoological Society’s education classes
- Switching to paper straws instead of plastic in the Zoo’s food areas
- Less plastic packaging on toys in the gift shops
- Collecting used cellphones from the public in the U.S. Bank Gathering Place
- Composting waste from the Zoo’s herbivorous animals
- A green roof on the Karen Peck Katz Conservation Education Center
- Solar panels near the Zoo’s admission booths and Nourish restaurant
Rain gardens and permeable pavement to reduce the amount of storm water runoff going into the sewer system
- Bikes that staff can ride around the Zoo instead of driving golf carts
